Saattue (Вот и переводите сами!!!!)

 Biography

Saattue is formed in 2001. Since the beginning of the band, it is clear that the band members want to play slow and darkest kind of metal and to write their lyrics in Finnish. After recording two demos as Kiduttajat, the band changes its’ name to Saattue.

The first CDEP Kivisydän is released in 2004. The original members of the band, V. Mänty (guitar/vocals), H. Lampinen (guitar) and bassist V. Heinonen, have now recruited a third guitarist T. Kalliomäki and a drummer T. Kristian to their line-up and the first live shows has been performed. The band's sound has progressed towards to doomier kind of metal and it is well dominated by the harmonic and heavy wall of three guitars. Kivisydän EP receives good reviews in magazines, gets national air play on radio and the band starts to gain more listeners. However, a few changes are ahead, while the procession advances. V. Mänty starts to concentrate on guitar only and T. Koskinen joins in as the vocalist. Bassist V. Heinonen leaves the band and S. Lahtinen steps in. The band plays more shows towards the end of the year 2004. After long a consideration, V. Mänty decides to leave the band in 2005. At the same time, the drummer T. Kristian is being replaced by M. Ahlsten. J. Koskela joins in to fill the position of rhythm guitar player.

Saattue records a three track promo EP Ikiuneen and releases it in January 2006. The new promo is receiving good critics - this time also from record companies. However, no serious contracts are being offered and the band continues to work on self-financed basis. The band knows that the next recording is going to play a great role on Saattue’s carrier progression and starts to write new material. Four tracks are being rehearsed and pre-produced. After a few setbacks, the band enters D-Studio in Klaukkala in May 2007. The plan is to release the new songs as an EP, titled as Jäähyvästi. However, at the same time, the band is secretly hoping that the new material would lead them to sign a record deal and that the planed EP could be extended to become an album instead. This eventually happens as Spinefarm Records offers Saattue an album contract. The band gladly accepts the offer and agrees to return to D-Studio to complete their debut album.

Saattue’s debut album Jäähyvästi is released by Spikefarm Records on January 2008 and it introduces seven tracks of pure saatto metal. Besides of the raw and doomy metal elements, Jäähyvästi has also more emotional and melodic passages on it and a few special appearances by a guest vocalist Ines Lukkanen.

Jäähyvästi receives great critics and proves that Saattue’s Finnish sung music is powerful enough to create also international interest. Knowing this, the band starts to prepare their second album Vuoroveri. The new music follows the direction of the debut album, but shows progression especially in creating greater contrasts. While the greatest common factor of the debut album’s lyrics was death, Vuoroveri subjects are mainly about the kind of ways of life that eventually lead to darkness and death. The overall feeling of the lyrics is very much connected to the darker side of Finnish mentality and based on folkloric ways of telling. Due to growing international demand, the band decides to ask Andy Koski-Semmens (a native English speaker and a singer of Ereipia) to try to translate the lyrics of the album to English. The project turns out to be successful and the results of it can be read at www.saattue.net or www.myspace.com/saattue

While recording Vuoroveri album, Saattue receives help from interesting and also rather surprising parties. Once again, all female vocals are being performed by Ines Lukkanen (of Embassy of Silence), who also writes lyrics to the song Synnistä syntynyt. Pasi “Ruoja” Koskinen of Ajattara agrees to be the quest vocalist of the songs Itsensä Herra and Vapahtaja. Aleksi Laiho of Children of Bodom kindly answers to the request to perform a guitar solo for the opening track of the album, Vapahtaja. The original vocalist of Saattue, V. Mänty, guests on backing vocals of the song Verenperimä. All cello parts of the album are being played by Aapo Romu of Vanguard and all Finnish zither parts by Aslak Tolonen of Nest & Tuonenpolku. Altogether Vuoroveri includes eight heavy, dark and dynamic tunes of doomy saatto metal.
